TOCCATA RONDO

This was written in 1989 for Rosanne Dopita, who gave the first performance at the Baldock Festival on the 7th May that year.

The title betrays the piece’s character and structure: it is a free-style ‘toccata’, intended to show off the technical virtuosity of the performer, and a ‘rondo’ where the initial theme (A) is contrasted with episodes (A B A C A in this case).

The melodic material is developed continuously throughout, and key centres are treated freely; abrupt, or remote, modulations and chromaticisms are features, along with strong rhythmic vitality.
