HARK! THE HERALD angels sing
Composed in 2021, this is a new setting of the traditional words by Charles Wesley, T. Whitefield, M. Madan and others. It is cast initially in a firm G major, until a climactically-generated upward key change in verse three gives a boost of tension. Changes of time signature between 6/8, 9/8, 2/4 and 3/4 provide a lively rhythmic flexibility and strong momentum.
The SATB chorus remains in four parts until the final divisi 8-part chord.
The interpolated organ quaver figures throughout are eventually adopted by the choir, forming a coda of affirmation and reiterating the refrain: “Glory to the new born King.”
